Rock Bottom

Gabriella knew something was wrong with her mom. She had known this every since she was a toddler. She didn’t even know if her mom loved her. She was quiet a lot and didn’t spend a lot of time with her. Gabriella knew her nanny much better than she knew her own mother and she had never once seen her father. Nanny Calista told her that her daddy was with God, although, Gabriella didn’t understand what that meant. Why did God need her dad when she did? It was clear to her too that her mom needed her dad as well. She didn’t understand why God was hogging him.

Then one day, Gabriella got bad news. Nanny Calista was being sent away. When Nanny Calista told her Gabriella started to cry, “Why? Why do you have to go away?”
“You are in school now Gabby, you don’t need me anymore.”
“I do! I do need you! Mama doesn’t pay any attention to me! I need you!”
It broke Nanny Calista’s heart to walk away from that house that day. She knew Gabriella was right, Francisella didn’t pay any attention to her daughter. She didn’t know what would happen to that little girl and she found herself brushing a tear from her eye.

Gabriella was desolate without Nanny Calista. She didn’t see her mom anymore. She would come home from school and the house would feel empty. She had no idea what her mom was doing. She’d come home from school and pull open the fridge. It never looked like her mom made any food so she was left to the juice and cookies and chips that she could make for herself. It wasn’t the kind of food a growing girl needs.

Bacillus’s Family Grows

Mallory knew this baby was coming and she was somehow going to have to have it alone. She screamed out. To her surprise, Bacillus came rushing back into the house. She was in too much pain to speak but did manage to give him a puzzled look. He smiled at her and said, “Somehow, I just knew.” Bacillus held her hand and helped her deliver their third child. A baby girl with black hair and Bacillus’s piercing blue eyes. They named her Chondria.

Coping with Mortality

The death of Anthracis and Francisella’s coldness to the rest of the family had left many of the Bacter’s in a stupor. Yersinia and Bacillus had done everything they could to try and get Francisella to see reason but she was blinded by and ignored their every attempt to reconcile. It seemed that Xavier was the only person in the household able to carry out a level of normal function. Yersinia always seemed to be on the phone with Bacillus trying to sort out what to do about their sister and Lora had started to go downhill after Anthracis’s death. This left Xavier to tend to Legionella. He didn’t mind really and loved his daughter immensely so it was nothing to him to teach her to talk. He was pleased to see that his daughter was an intelligent little toddler and quickly was repeating the words he said to her.

It seemed that once Yersinia heard her daughter speaking she snapped back to her own present reality. She felt terrible that she had neglected her daughter and started to spend more time with her. She wanted a good, strong relationship with her daughter because she hoped to avoid whatever had happened with Francisella with her own daughter. It was with this new resolve that Yersinia taught Legionella to walk.

Francisella’s Anger

The anger and hate that Francisella harbored for her family grew deeper and deeper with each passing day and with each attempt they made to contact her. She wanted them to leave her alone. Couldn’t they see that she had no desire to speak to them? Why weren’t they getting the message? She didn’t understand.

Bacillus had tried to call and talk to her but Francisella told him what she really thought of him. She hated him and wasn’t afraid to make that known. The day after her phone call from Bacillus she was very irritated to see that her sister had shown up on her front door step. How had she found out where she lived? She hadn’t told anyone her new address and hadn’t planned on telling anyone. Francisella quickly ran upstairs and told the nanny to keep Gabriella upstairs. She didn’t want Yersinia finding out about her niece.

Life with Bacillus and Mallory

Bacillus and Mallory returned from Anthracis’s funeral with the kids feeling a little down. Bacillus was upset that Francisella hadn’t made it to the funeral. Yersinia had told him that she was acting strangely. It was this that led Bacillus to give his youngest sister a call.
“Hello?”
“Francisella, this is Bacillus. If you hang up on me I will come to your house and beat your door down and force you to listen to me.” He paused for a few moments and when he didn’t hear her hang-up he continued, “First of all, why weren’t you at Dad’s funeral?”
“Why would I come to the funeral?”
“Well, how about the fact that it was your father.”
“He wasn’t my father.”
“Francisella, Dad loved you. Why do you say that?”
“If that was true, he would have made me heir.”
“What? How can you say that? If anyone should be upset about the heir situation it should be me. I’m the oldest.”
“He always treated me like his favorite and then he goes off and gives it to Yersinia!”
“Dad had his reasons. He was asking for you when he was dying and you weren’t there! I don’t think you deserved to be heir because of that!”
“Don’t lecture me about what I do and don’t deserve! I have no desire to speak to any of you ever again!”
“Francisella, what is going on? What did we do to you?”
“What did you do? WHAT DID YOU DO? How can you ask me that? You know what you did!”
Bacillus was confused and he changed his tone to one that was more gentle, “Sella, I’m sorry, I don’t know what you are talking about.”
“Orlando, Bacillus! You got him killed! I know you are the Baby-Face they talk about! I know that it was you that made his hit go wrong! It is your fault that he’s dead!”
Bacillus felt his heart sink. How could Orlando be dead? He was just doing his job. He felt terrible. He knew how much his sister had loved Orlando and had never meant for anything like this to happen, “Sella, I’m so sorry. I was doing my job, just like Orlando was. I didn’t even know who it was until later. You have to believe me when I say I didn’t do it on purpose.”
“Just shut up, Bacillus! You never liked Orlando! It was your plan from the beginning. I hate you! I hate your stupid wife and kids! I hate Yersinia! And I hate Mom and Dad! Leave me alone!”
“Sella, please…” but it was too late, Francisella had hung up on him. Bacillus felt his heart breaking. He had hurt his sister and he couldn’t do anything to make it better. He couldn’t go by and see her because she had never told him where she lived. He brushed a tear out of his eye and went into his bedroom and stretched out on the bed.

He hadn’t been in their room long before Mallory came in. She could tell something was wrong so she climbed up on the bed and snuggled up beside her husband. It was exactly what Bacillus needed from her at that moment.

The End of an Era

Lora felt as if her heart were being tugged in two. She was torn between the grief she was feeling over the declining health of her husband and the joy she felt over the birth of her granddaughter. When she was with little Legionella she was so happy. But on occasion she would feel sad because Anthracis couldn’t hold his little granddaughter in his own arms. When she was born Lora had carried her in and laid her on the bed beside him. All he could do was weep. He was dying; there was no doubt about that. So Lora took advantage of the joy she felt with Legionella and would go into her nursery to escape the pain that came with facing her husband’s mortality.
“Oh, little Legionella, you will know your grandfather and he would have loved you so,” she’d whisper in the baby’s ear.

Francisella’s Child

Francisella was in shock. She asked the doctor several times to repeat herself and he affirmed over and over that she was in deed pregnant. Orlando had said that was great news but what did he know? Francisella did not want to have a baby. Having babies was for people like Mallory and Yersinia not for people like herself. There was no way she wanted to have a baby. Orlando seemed to want the baby though and since he was the father she did have to accept his wishes. When he suggested she call her parents and let them know she was expecting she blew up in his face for even daring to think that she would want to talk to her parents. She made up her mind that would be their punishment for making Yersinia the heir. Orlando didn’t understand any of this but he gave up and kept his mouth shut.

Orlando had told Francisella that he was going to have to travel for business and while Francisella was disappointed that Orlando would be gone for a few days she was also slightly relieved. She was starting to show and was afraid Orlando would be turned off by her body. In fact she noticed that her belly had popped out quite far and it seemed definite that this baby was joining them whether she wanted it to or not.

Bacillus’s Return

Several more days had passed and Mallory still had heard nothing from Bacillus. She was terrified. She called Lora and Anthracis to see if they had heard from him, they had heard nothing. She called Francisella who gave her a rather cold shoulder and asked her why she though Bacillus would ever tell her where he was. Mallory was a little confused but let it go. She was so scared that something terrible had happened to Bacillus.

As much as she wanted to sit and fret over Bacillus’s safety she had a toddler to care for. Cell seemed to notice the absence of his father and gave his mother all his love and devotion. Even as a toddler he had a strong desire to please her. So as Mallory taught him to walk he did so with great ease.

Could it be? It’s Generation 3!

Simmer’s Note:Sorry about the title but I couldn’t resist.

Yersinia was settling nicely into married life. Her mother was right, being married really didn’t interfere with her career much. She was still doing well as a surgeon and rather enjoyed coming home to Xavier every evening. Xavier had to quit his job as a professor because he had married one of his students. That was very frowned upon and he was forced to resign. He was disappointed but it gave him the opportunity to pursue a sports career, which was something he had always dreamed of doing. He was a starter for the Legacy Lacrosse team. It wasn’t as glamorous or as prestigious as playing baseball or football but Yersinia was proud of him nonetheless.

Yersinia had noticed that since she and Xavier had returned from their mini-honeymoon she hadn’t been feeling quite herself. She felt tired all the time and she had noticed that while she has been studying lately she’s had to stop and rush to the bathroom to throw up.

Yersinia was in a bit of a denial about the true cause of her situation. She wasn’t ready to have children yet so she tried to play her condition off on a stomach bug. But her medical expertise couldn’t allow her to be kept in the dark about things much longer and she had to accept that fact that whether she was ready or not, she was pregnant. She smiled to herself slightly when she thought of her mother’s reaction. Lora would be beside herself. Ever since she had gotten her first grandchild from Bacillus Lora only wanted more. But what would Xavier think? That made her feel a little nervous. There was no doubt her parents would be beyond thrilled but Xavier might not be.
